Atlético Madrid signs David Hancko after failed deal with Al-Nassr

Slovakian defender joins as sixth reinforcement after dramatic Saudi move collapses

Atlético de Madrid has officially signed David Hancko as part of its summer reinforcement strategy, taking advantage of a collapsed transfer to Saudi side Al-Nassr. The Slovakian defender becomes the sixth new signing for the Spanish club in what has been one of their busiest windows in recent years.

Hancko, who was previously on Atlético’s radar last season, had been close to finalizing a transfer to Al-Nassr in a deal worth approximately €40 million. However, the move broke down in dramatic fashion, opening the door for the Spanish giants to make a swift move.

Al-Nassr Fiasco Sparks Transfer U-Turn

According to reports, Hancko had already traveled to Austria to join Al-Nassr’s pre-season, expecting to complete his transfer from Feyenoord. But upon arrival at the hotel, the defender was reportedly left unattended, unable even to check in a shocking breakdown in communication that cast doubt over the entire deal.

The Saudi club then abruptly pulled out of the agreement, despite having already settled terms with Feyenoord. The Dutch side reacted angrily to the breach.

“David spent months considering this move. Everything was agreed, but they backed out with baseless excuses,” said Raymond Salomon, a Feyenoord spokesperson. “We have never seen a player treated with such disrespect. Feyenoord stands by David.”

Atlético Madrid Acts Quickly to Finalize the Signing

In the wake of the botched Saudi deal, Atlético Madrid wasted no time. With Hancko already on their shortlist from previous seasons, the Spanish club moved quickly to present a convincing offer, finalizing the transfer in record time.

Hancko, 26, had a standout season with Feyenoord and was instrumental in their recent domestic success. His versatility, aerial strength, and calm on the ball make him a valuable addition to Diego Simeone’s backline, which has been undergoing significant restructuring.

Sixth Signing in a New-Look Atlético Squad

The arrival of Hancko follows the recent signing of Marc Pubill, highlighting Atlético’s focus on strengthening defensively. With Champions League ambitions and La Liga competition intensifying, Simeone’s squad refresh aims to bring both experience and consistency.

Hancko’s decision to join Atlético marks the end of a turbulent transfer saga one that unexpectedly pivoted from a €40 million Saudi move to a key role in Madrid’s next chapter.
