Atlético Madrid agrees to loan Thomas Lemar to Girona

Atlético de Madrid has reached an agreement to send midfielder Thomas Lemar on loan to Girona FC, marking another move in the club’s summer overhaul. The French international is no longer part of Diego Simeone’s plans, and his departure helps the club trim its wage bill ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Lemar Leaves After Decline in Form
Once seen as a key part of Atlético’s midfield, Lemar’s role has diminished in recent seasons due to inconsistent performances and recurring injuries. The 28-year-old, who joined Atlético from AS Monaco in 2018, had not been expected to feature regularly this season.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Girona quickly struck a deal with Atlético, who posed no resistance in offloading the midfielder. The agreement includes a loan valid until June 2026, with Girona set to cover 50% of Lemar’s salary. No permanent transfer clause has been reported at this stage.
Atlético Continues Squad Reshaping
The move follows Atlético’s sale of Brazilian winger Samuel Lino to Flamengo, as the club continues to restructure its squad and reduce payroll expenses. Additional departures are expected in the coming weeks.
Girona, who finished impressively in La Liga last season, adds an experienced option to its midfield with Lemar’s arrival. The Catalan side is aiming to build on its recent momentum and sees Lemar as a valuable reinforcement despite his recent form dip.
No Buy Option Confirmed
So far, the deal is confirmed as a straight loan with no obligation to buy, though future talks could revisit that option depending on the player’s performance. An official announcement from both clubs is expected soon.
