Brazilian forward Rodrygo Goes was once again under fire from Real Madrid fans after a poor display in the club’s 3-0 win over RB Salzburg in the Club World Cup group stage.

Real Madrid sealed their place in the round of 16 with a convincing win on Thursday (June 26), but the performance of Rodrygo, who came off the bench in the second half, sparked frustration among fans — and even ridicule online.

Costly mistake goes viral

The 23-year-old was left on the bench by Xabi Alonso for the second consecutive match. Unlike the previous game against Pachuca, where he didn’t feature at all, Rodrygo did get some minutes against RB Salzburg but failed to make an impact.

In one particular moment that quickly circulated on social media, Rodrygo mishandled a perfect through-ball from Brahim Díaz. The poor first touch saw the Brazilian lose control of the play entirely, drawing jeers from the stands and memes online.

Fans react harshly: “Bench him or sell him”

Real Madrid supporters didn’t hold back their criticism. On social media, many expressed frustration with Rodrygo’s form, with some even calling for him to be benched indefinitely or sold in the upcoming transfer window.

“I think Rodrygo should go to hell. Let’s keep Endrick and Gonzalo, no need to choose,” wrote one Spanish fan on X.

“I just hope Rodrygo ends up on the bench… or at another team,” added another, reflecting growing impatience among the Madridistas.

With young strikers Gonzalo García shining and Endrick set to return from injury, Rodrygo’s position in the squad appears more vulnerable than ever.

Transfer rumors: Manchester City the preferred destination

According to Cadena SER, Rodrygo is aware of his uncertain standing and is reportedly open to leaving Real Madrid. Despite interest from Arsenal, the Brazilian international prefers a move to Manchester City, where he believes he can better develop under Pep Guardiola.

So far, no official offer has been made by the Premier League champions, but the player’s entourage is said to be awaiting contact.

What’s next for Rodrygo?

Rodrygo remains part of the squad for the Club World Cup, but his role in the knockout rounds is unclear. With Real Madrid set to face Juventus in the round of 16, Gonzalo García is expected to retain his place in the starting XI, while Mbappé could return from illness.

Rodrygo may have one more opportunity to prove his worth or risk slipping further down the pecking order in Madrid’s new-look attack.
