Pressure from a ‘Citizen’ on Guardiola: “If I don’t play, I’m leaving.”

Pep Guardiola has a new front at Manchester City. Young defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, one of the gems of the City youth system, has raised his voice to demand a place in the first team for next season. At 19 years old, the defender isn’t hiding anything: if he doesn’t fit into the Catalan manager’s plans, he’s considering looking for playing time away from the Etihad.

“To be honest, I just want to play for the first team,” he said recently in an interview. His words have resonated strongly in the English press, where they interpret his statement as a direct warning to Guardiola: either he has a place in the first team, or he will consider leaving, whether in the form of a loan or a transfer.

Simpson-Pusey has already made six appearances for the first team this season, taking advantage of absences due to injury. His performance has been remarkable, so much so that he was recognized as the reserve team’s Player of the Year. A distinction that reinforces his belief that he is ready for the next step.

Ben Wilkinson, the Under-23 manager, also spoke in favor of the center-back: “Being between the reserve team and the first team is a huge challenge, but he’s stepped up in key moments. The award for best player reflects his maturity and competitive level ,” he told the Manchester Evening News.

Some statements that say a lot

With Guardiola determined to keep a smaller squad next season, the situation may not favor Simpson-Pusey. Still, the England youth international insists on his ambition: “I’m ready. I just want to take the next step.” His immediate future is in Guardiola’s hands.
