Olympique de Marseille beats Le Havre in Ligue 1 and secures a place in the Champions League

They’re back. Olympique Marseille will return to the Champions League after a three-year absence. Roberto De Zerbi ‘s team beat Le Havre (1-3) with a decisive goal from Mason Greenwood in the final stretch and secured their place in the top three of Ligue 1, which gives them a ticket to next year’s Champions League. All of this, of course, came after the match was suspended for 30 minutes in the second half.

But what happened in the 62nd minute of the match? After Gouiri’s 1-0 lead, ‘RMC Sport’ reports that Le Havre Ultras went to a side stand to attack the OM fans who were celebrating the goal. To protect themselves, these OM fans had to go down onto the pitch, and the match was then stopped for almost 30 minutes, with the players going to the locker room and the police intervening.

After the restart, Soumare equalized after Amine Gouiri’s goal in the fourth minute to make it 1-1… with the home side’s first shot on target.

But Mason Greenwood was still missing the opportunity. The Ligue 1 MVP (outside PSG) scored his 19th goal in the French league to help the southerners draw 2-1. Gouiri rounded off the victory with a brace in the 99th minute. A victory that mathematically secures their place in next season’s Champions League with one match remaining.
