AS Monaco beats Lyon in Ligue 1 and secures a place in the Champions League

It’s now official. AS Monaco secured their place in next season’s Champions League with a 2-0 win at the Stade Louis II against Lyon, which leaves their presence in a European tournament up in the air with one matchday remaining in France’s Ligue 1.

Adi Hutter ‘s team has gone five matches without defeat, with three wins and two draws. Having benefited from the setbacks of other contenders for the top flight, such as Nice, Lille, and Strasbourg, they now have a lead that is unattainable for the rest of the table.

Third-place Monaco sealed the victory in six minutes. From the 62nd minute, with Japanese goal Takumi Minamino opening the scoring, to the 68th minute goal by Swiss Denis Zakaria, which secured the home side’s victory.

Lyon, however, has a tough time in European competition. They suffered their third defeat in their last four matches and are three points behind Strasbourg and Lille, who are ahead of them in the table. They close out the season with a visit to Angers, who have nothing to play for.
