With plenty of excitement in the final minutes, Lyon and Manchester United drew 2-2 this Friday in France in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals. Argentine Thiago Almada, formerly of Botafogo, opened the scoring in the 24th minute, and young defender Leny Yoro equalized in first-half stoppage time, taking advantage of a rebound from goalkeeper Lucas Perri, another former Botafogo player from Lyon. In the second half, both teams saved the best for last. In the 43rd minute, Zirkzee headed the ball in for United, and in the 49th minute, in the last play of the game, Cherki tied the game for Lyon, taking the rebound from goalkeeper Onana.

The two teams will face each other again next Thursday at Old Trafford, with the contest wide open. The other three first leg matches of the quarter-finals were played on Thursday: Bödo/Glimt 2 x 0 Lazio, Tottenham 1 x 1 Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers 0 x 1 Athletic Bilbao.
