Manchester City is beaten by Tottenham in the Premier League
Visitors end City’s 50-game unbeaten home run as Pep Guardiola suffers five straight defeats for the first time in his career
SUMMARY
Manchester City’s bad run of form is not over yet. Playing at home this Saturday, Pep Guardiola’s team was thrashed by Tottenham, 4-0, in the 12th round of the Premier League, and suffered their fifth consecutive defeat in the 2024/25 season. It is the first time that such a sequence has happened in coach Pep Guardiola’s career. The goals in the match were scored by Maddison, twice, Pedro Porro and Johnson.
FIFTH DEFEAT IN A ROW
The defeat by Tottenham marks Manchester City’s fifth defeat of the season – all in a row. Pep Guardiola’s side have lost to Tottenham in the League Cup, Sporting in the Champions League and Bournemouth and Brighton in the Premier League before Saturday’s defeat.
The poor run of results is a first for the City manager. Pep has never lost five games in a row in his career. The last time City went on a losing streak of four or more games was between the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons. The result also ended City’s 52-game unbeaten run at their stadium.
THE GAME
Manchester City started the match by putting pressure on Tottenham. The home team almost opened the scoring in the fourth minute with Haaland, but the ball deflected out. Despite City having more possession, the away team managed to score on the first attempt. After a pass, Kulusevski beat Gvardiol, crossed, and found Maddison at the far post to tap it into the goal. Seven minutes later, in the 19th minute, Manchester City made a mistake, Maddison passed to Son Heung-Min, received the ball back and tapped it past goalkeeper Ederson to score his and Tottenham’s second goal of the match. Pep Guardiola’s team tried to regain control of the game, but despite creating a few chances, they were unable to reduce the score.
In the second half, Tottenham managed to keep the ball at their feet for the first few minutes. The visiting team worked well, and in the seventh minute, in a counterattack led by Kulusevski, the ball reached Solanke, who passed it to Pedro Porro, who shot towards goal and scored the third goal. Trailing on the scoreboard, Manchester City tried to get more involved in the game. Pep Guardiola’s team even threatened with Haaland, who hit the post with a shot. Furthermore, when City tried to get close to the ball with Haaland himself and also with Gündogan, goalkeeper Vicario made some great saves. In injury time, City played the ball wrong, Werner took off and passed it low to Johnson, who just had to push it into the goal and seal the rout: 4-0.
TRIBUTE TO RODRI
Before the match between Manchester City and Tottenham got underway, midfielder Rodri was honoured for winning the 2024 Ballon d’Or. The City midfielder beat favourite Vinicius Junior in the awards ceremony held by France Football magazine . The 28-year-old Euro champion for Spain lifted the award in front of the fans present at the stadium.
