CHESHIRE, UK — Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is continuing to settle his affairs in England, reportedly activating a “break clause” in his luxury rental agreement to avoid a staggering £250,000 loss.

Sacked at the turn of the year and replaced by interim boss Michael Carrick, Amorim had been paying £15,000-per-month for a high-end six-bedroom mansion in Cheshire. While the Portuguese tactician walked away with a £12 million compensation package from United, he has now successfully negotiated a rent write-off, allowing him to hand back the keys early following his dismissal.

The Mainoo Controversy Re-ignited

While Amorim settles his financial accounts, his tactical legacy at Old Trafford is being heavily scrutinized. Gary Neville, speaking on Stick to Football, has labeled Amorim’s refusal to play Kobbie Mainoo as his “worst decision” during his short-lived tenure.

“It killed Kobbie Mainoo publicly,” Neville stated. “When Amorim said it was a choice between Mainoo or Bruno [Fernandes], I never agreed. He never put him in the team, apart from the League Cup against Grimsby.”

The Carrick Effect

The contrast under Michael Carrick could not be sharper. While Mainoo was sidelined under the previous regime, he has become the “engine room” of a United side that has taken the Premier League by storm in early 2026.

Since taking over, Carrick has guided United to marquee wins over Manchester City, Arsenal, and Tottenham, firmly putting the club back in the race for Champions League qualification.

As United prepare to face Everton on Monday, the “Amorim era” is quickly becoming a distant, albeit expensive, memory for the Old Trafford faithful.
