MANCHESTER, UK — Manchester United’s ambitious attempt to raid rivals Liverpool for Alexis Mac Allister has hit an immediate roadblock, with the Red Devils unable to offer the Argentine his “dream” incentive to move to Old Trafford.
In what would be the first direct business between the two clubs in over six decades, United are reportedly weighing up a stunning summer move for the 27-year-old World Cup winner. However, a major branding obstacle already stands in the way: Mac Allister’s iconic No. 10 shirt is strictly off-limits.
The Matheus Cunha Factor
Since arriving at Old Trafford, Brazilian star Matheus Cunha has made the No. 10 jersey his own. With Cunha currently in a rich vein of form under Michael Carrick, it is understood the club has no intention of asking him to vacate the number even for a marquee signing like Mac Allister.
The Argentine midfielder has worn the No. 10 exclusively since his Premier League arrival in 2019, both at Brighton and during his stint at Anfield.
Liverpool’s Contract Dilemma
United sense an opening at Anfield following a turbulent campaign for Arne Slot’s side. While Mac Allister is under contract until 2028, Liverpool officials are reportedly hesitant about offering an extension to the midfielder as he approaches his late 20s.
With younger stars like Dominik Szoboszlai (25) and Ryan Gravenberch (23) along with high-earner Florian Wirtz expected to take precedence in contract talks, United believe a logical opening exists.
Is the No. 8 an Option?
If the No. 10 is unavailable, Mac Allister could look toward the No. 8 jersey he famously wore at Boca Juniors. Currently, that shirt belongs to captain Bruno Fernandes. However, with growing speculation surrounding Fernandes’ long-term future at the club, a reshuffle in the United engine room could be on the horizon.
Whether Liverpool would break a 60-year-old taboo by selling directly to Manchester United remains the biggest question of the 2026 summer window.
