Real Madrid defender Fran García is reportedly “distraught” after the club’s board vetoed a last-minute move to Premier League side Bournemouth.

The 26-year-old left-back believed his time at the Santiago Bernabéu had come to an end. According to journalist Sergio Quirante, García had already said his goodbyes to teammates and staff at Valdebebas, only for the club to pull the plug on the deal in the final hours of the window.

From Club World Cup Hero to Fourth Choice

García’s desire to join the Cherries stems from a dramatic collapse in his playing time. Under former manager Xabi Alonso, the Spaniard was a key pillar of the team, climaxing in a spectacular Club World Cup campaign in the United States, where he even scored against Borussia Dortmund.

However, the arrival of Álvaro Arbeloa as head coach and the signing of Álvaro Carreras have pushed García down the pecking order. Now sitting behind Carreras, Ferland Mendy, and even makeshift defender Eduardo Camavinga, the No. 20 has become the fourth-choice left-back.

The fallout from the failed move has been immediate. The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana reports that García was so frustrated with the board’s decision that he requested to train away from the first-team squad.

Bournemouth’s sporting project was highly attractive to the defender, offering him a guaranteed starting spot in the Premier League. Instead, he remains stuck in Madrid as the club prepares for a crucial La Liga clash against Valencia this Sunday.

La Liga Title Race Update: Real Madrid currently sit second in the table with 54 points, trailing leaders Barcelona by just a single point. With every game now a “must-win,” Arbeloa’s decision to keep García as squad depth might be strategic, but it has clearly cost him the player’s harmony.
