Bayer Leverkusen have identified Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega as a primary target to bolster their squad following a long-term injury to Mark Flekken.

With Xabi Alonso’s side fighting for the Bundesliga title, the loss of Flekken has forced the Leverkusen board into the market for an “immediate impact” replacement. According to transfer expert Matteo Moretto, Ortega is now at the top of their shortlist due to his proven reliability and extensive experience in German football.

The Ortega Situation: A Perfect Opportunity?

The 33-year-old German goalkeeper is entering the final months of his contract at the Etihad Stadium. While Ortega is highly valued by Pep Guardiola as the direct backup to Ederson, the lure of becoming a guaranteed starter in his home country could be enough to force a move.

Because his deal is nearing its end, Manchester City may be open to a cut-price transfer fee this winter rather than losing him for free in the summer.

Currently, Janis Blaswich serves as the backup at the BayArena, but the management is reportedly looking for a more experienced profile to take over the No. 1 shirt during Flekken’s absence.

  • Bundesliga Proven: Ortega’s previous heroics at Arminia Bielefeld make him a low-risk signing.
  • Ball Distribution: His style mirrors the “sweeper-keeper” role that Xabi Alonso demands.

Alternative Options

While Ortega is the preferred choice, Leverkusen are keeping their options open. Other names being monitored include:

  • James Trafford: The former City academy star now at Burnley.
  • Filip Jörgensen: Chelsea’s young shot-stopper, though a loan deal would be more likely there.

The next few days will be decisive as Leverkusen looks to finalize a deal before the January window slams shut.
