Manchester United are reportedly leading the race for West Ham’s breakout star Mateus Fernandes, with a specific “relegation clause” making the Portuguese midfielder a prime target for the summer.

According to reports from Caught Offside, the Red Devils are keeping a close eye on the 21-year-old as West Ham continue to languish in the Premier League’s bottom three. Occupying 18th place, the Hammers face the grim reality of the Championship a scenario that would allow top-tier clubs to snatch Fernandes for a predetermined, cut-price fee.

The “Guardiola Factor” and City Interest

Manchester United aren’t alone in their pursuit. Rivals Manchester City are also said to be monitoring the youngster’s development, with Pep Guardiola reportedly “impressed” by Fernandes’ technical security and tactical intelligence.

With six assists across all competitions this season, the former Sporting CP academy graduate has been a rare bright spot in a difficult campaign for Julen Lopetegui’s side. His versatility, being able to operate as a creative #8 or a more advanced playmaker, has made him one of the most discussed prospects in the league.

A Strategic Move for United

The United board has identified the midfield as an area requiring immediate technical reinforcement. Fernandes is seen as a long-term solution who could bridge the gap between defense and attack a role the club has struggled to fill consistently this term.

The existence of a relegation clause significantly lowers the financial risk for United, making the negotiation much more straightforward should West Ham fail to beat the drop. However, if the Hammers manage to secure Premier League safety, United would likely have to pay a massive premium to lure the Portuguese star away from the London Stadium.

The Verdict

As the season enters its final stretch, Fernandes’ future remains tied to West Ham’s survival. For Manchester United, the opportunity to sign a Premier League-proven talent with a high ceiling for a reduced fee is an opportunity too good to pass up.
