Real Madrid are reportedly reconsidering a move for Al-Hilal midfielder Rúben Neves, with new manager Álvaro Arbeloa looking to bolster his squad following a turbulent start to the season.

After the sudden departure of Xabi Alonso and the appointment of Arbeloa to the dugout, Los Blancos are shiftng their transfer strategy. According to reports from Diario AS, the Portuguese international, who was previously rejected during the Alonso era, has now climbed back to the top of the club’s shortlist.

A Bargain in the Desert?

Rúben Neves is currently in the final months of his contract with Saudi giants Al-Hilal. At 28 years old, the former Wolves captain is said to be eager for a return to European football.

Real Madrid’s board is reportedly willing to offer up to €20 million (£16.8m) to secure his services this January. If a deal isn’t reached now, Madrid could wait to sign him as a free agent in July. However, the move hinges on one major condition: Neves must be willing to take a significant pay cut from his current “Middle East” wages to fit into Madrid’s salary structure.

Madrid aren’t the only ones watching. Manchester United have long been linked with Neves, but they have yet to submit a formal bid. With 8 goals and 6 assists in 27 matches this season (including performances for Portugal), Neves remains one of the most productive midfielders outside of Europe’s top five leagues.

Vitinha Remains the “Dream” Target

While Neves is a realistic and immediate option, Florentino Pérez still holds a long-standing interest in PSG’s Vitinha. The young Portuguese playmaker is seen as the “Galactico” signing for the future, but with a long-term contract in Paris and a valuation exceeding €100m, Neves represents a far more accessible “Plan B” for the current window.
