Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has offered his support to his former rival Xabi Alonso, following the Spaniard’s abrupt dismissal from Real Madrid earlier this week.
The sacking came just days after Barcelona’s dominant victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final a result that proved to be the final straw for the Madrid board. Speaking at a press conference ahead of Barça’s Copa del Rey clash against Racing Santander, Flick maintained a professional and respectful stance toward his colleague.
“He is a Great Coach”: Flick on Alonso
Despite the fierce rivalry between the two clubs, Flick emphasized his personal connection with Alonso. “That’s football, and it’s none of my business. What I can say is that I have a good relationship with Xabi; we met in Leverkusen when I was the German national coach, and we’ve kept in touch,” Flick revealed.
The German tactician expressed no doubt that Alonso would bounce back quickly: “I wish him all the best. I’m sure he’ll soon have a great project for himself and his staff. He has a bright future ahead of him.”
The Cancelo Era Begins
Beyond the drama in Madrid, Flick confirmed the news Barcelona fans have been waiting for: João Cancelo is ready to play. The Portuguese international, who arrived on loan from Al-Hilal, has been registered and is part of the squad traveling to Santander.
“I think Cancelo can play a few minutes tomorrow,” Flick confirmed, albeit cautiously. “In our opinion, we believe he is ready to contribute.”
