MADRID – Portuguese international Rúben Neves has reportedly set his sights on a return to European football, with Real Madrid being his preferred destination. However, despite the player’s eagerness to join Álvaro Arbeloa’s squad, a deal remains complicated due to internal resistance at the Santiago Bernabéu.

According to Carrusel Deportivo (Cadena SER), Neves is willing to leave Al-Hilal during the January window. However, President Florentino Pérez is currently the primary roadblock, as he believes the current squad does not require mid-season reinforcements.

The Manchester United Factor

While Neves dreams of wearing the white shirt, Manchester United are closely monitoring the situation. Under the guidance of Michael Carrick, the Red Devils have identified the 28-year-old as a high-priority target to stabilize their midfield.

If Real Madrid maintains their “no-signing” policy this winter, Old Trafford could become the most viable escape route for the former Wolverhampton captain.

A Market Opportunity: The Six-Month Window

Neves’ contract with the Saudi side is set to expire in June 2026, meaning Al-Hilal might be forced to accept a “symbolic fee” this January to avoid losing him for free.

  • Elite Form: This season, Neves has been in spectacular form, recording 11 goal contributions in 21 appearances.
  • Premier League Experience: With six years at Wolves under his belt, a transition back to England would be seamless, making him an attractive low-risk option for United.

Pérez Eyes Alternative Targets

Florentino Pérez’s hesitation may stem from his long-term vision. Reports suggest that Real Madrid is eyeing a massive summer move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández or PSG’s Vitinha. While Neves offers immediate quality, the Madrid board seems focused on younger profiles for the upcoming summer revolution.

As the deadline approaches, Rúben Neves finds himself in a waiting game: hold out for his Madrid dream or return to the Premier League where he is a proven star.
