James Rodríguez is close to choosing his next club as he prepares for the final stretch of his career with the 2026 World Cup firmly in mind. The Colombian star is officially a free agent after leaving León (Mexico) at the end of last year and is now in advanced talks with Columbus Crew, from Major League Soccer.
According to RTI Esporte, negotiations between James and the MLS side have progressed significantly, and a deal for the remainder of the 2026 season is already on the table.
MLS Move Gains Strength After Saudi Arabia Rejection
In recent weeks, James Rodríguez received a lucrative proposal from Al-Shabab, of Saudi Arabia. The offer reportedly included a salary of R$ 80.4 million per season, which would have made him one of the highest-paid players in world football.
Despite the financial appeal, the Colombian midfielder rejected the move to the Middle East, prioritizing sporting competitiveness and visibility ahead of the World Cup.
Columbus Crew Offer Includes High Salary and Revenue Share
Columbus Crew are willing to make James Rodríguez one of the league’s marquee players. The American club is reportedly offering a salary of US$ 416,600 per month (around R$ 2.2 million).
In addition to the fixed salary, the contract would include a percentage of revenue generated by MLS Season Pass subscriptions, directly linked to fan engagement driven by the Colombian star’s arrival.
If the deal is finalized, James would once again become the highest-paid Colombian footballer in the world, surpassing names such as Luis Díaz (Bayern Munich) and Luis Suárez (Sporting CP).
Return to São Paulo and La Liga Ruled Out
At one point, James Rodríguez was linked with a return to Spanish football, but his representatives were unable to secure interest from La Liga clubs.
More recently, rumors surfaced about a possible comeback to São Paulo FC. However, sources close to the player indicate that a return to Brazilian football is not being considered, following his disappointing and short-lived spell at the Morumbi club.
James Rodríguez’s 2025 Numbers
During the 2025 season, combining appearances for León and the Colombian national team, the 34-year-old midfielder played 20 matches, scoring five goals and providing seven assists, totaling 12 goal contributions.
With negotiations ongoing, an official announcement could arrive soon, potentially marking James Rodríguez’s entry into MLS as one of the league’s biggest signings ahead of the 2026 World Cup cycle.
