Manchester United have officially dismissed Rúben Amorim and confirmed Darren Fletcher as interim manager. The former midfielder will take charge of the first team until further notice, as the club begins its search for a permanent replacement.

The decision was announced on Monday (5) following a run of results that fell well short of expectations in the current season.

Amorim Leaves After Poor Run of Results

Amorim departs Old Trafford with a win percentage of just 36.92%, the lowest of any recent Manchester United manager. The figure is even worse than that recorded by Erik ten Hag, who was previously dismissed to make way for the Portuguese coach.

Despite arriving with high expectations, Amorim struggled to stabilize performances or restore consistency, prompting the club to act decisively.

United Begin Search for New Manager

Manchester United are already active in the market and evaluating potential candidates for the role. Sources close to the situation indicate that Oliver Glasner, currently at Crystal Palace, has emerged as the leading option among the club’s shortlist.

The board are expected to prioritize experience and reliability as they look to steady the team for the remainder of the season.

Darren Fletcher Takes Temporary Charge

In the short term, Darren Fletcher has been entrusted with leading the squad. The former United player, who made over 300 appearances for the club, will be in the dugout for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley (7).

Fletcher’s deep understanding of the club’s culture and structure played a key role in his appointment, although there is no indication that he will be considered for the job on a permanent basis.

Interim Role Likely to Be Short-Term

Due to Fletcher’s limited managerial experience, Manchester United’s hierarchy are expected to appoint an established coach once negotiations are finalized. The interim arrangement is viewed strictly as a transitional solution.

Mainoo Could Benefit From Managerial Change

One immediate consequence of Amorim’s departure could be a renewed opportunity for Kobbie Mainoo. The midfielder was largely sidelined under the former coach and failed to feature regularly.

His situation has attracted interest from Napoli, who are reportedly monitoring developments closely and could move for the player during the current European transfer window.

A Pivotal Moment at Old Trafford

With Amorim gone and Fletcher temporarily in charge, Manchester United enter another defining phase. The next managerial appointment will be crucial as the club attempts to halt instability and reset its direction for the rest of the campaign.
