Arsenal and Tottenham both secured victories on Saturday, briefly knocking Liverpool off the top of the Premier League table before the Reds’ clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal Go Top Despite Odegaard Injury
At the Emirates, Arsenal defeated West Ham 2-0 in a match that saw former Hammers captain Declan Rice open the scoring in the 38th minute. The midfielder pounced on a rebound after Alphonse Areola parried Eberechi Eze’s shot.
In the second half, Bukayo Saka doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, sealing three points and sending Mikel Arteta’s side provisionally top of the table with 16 points, one ahead of Liverpool.
However, the win was marred by another setback for Martin Ødegaard, who left the pitch with a knee injury after half an hour. The Arsenal captain has now been injured in all three of his home league appearances this season.
“We dominated and deserved to win,” Arteta said post-match. “To reach the top of the table after some tough games and injuries shows the resilience of this squad.”
Tottenham Edge Leeds in Heavy Rain
Meanwhile, Tottenham won 2-1 away at Leeds, keeping up the pace in the title fight. French forward Mathys Tel opened the scoring for the visitors in the 23rd minute before Noah Okafor equalized shortly after in the 34th.
With torrential rain battering Elland Road, new signing Mohammed Kudus struck the decisive goal, handing Spurs the win and moving them to third place on 14 points.
“I think personality was the key,” manager Thomas Frank said. “Coming here, in these conditions, and staying focused—it shows the character of the team.”
Manchester United Bounce Back Under Amorim
Elsewhere, Manchester United beat Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford, relieving pressure on coach Ruben Amorim. Mason Mount scored in the 8th minute, while Benjamin Sesko doubled the lead in the 31st.
The result gives United their third win in seven league matches, moving them to eighth place with 10 points. It also marked a debut for goalkeeper Senne Lammens, signed from Royal Antwerp this summer.
For Sunderland, it was just their second defeat since returning to the Premier League. Despite the loss, they remain in sixth place, continuing their strong start.
