Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher to receive prestigious Athletic Bilbao One-Club Man award

Jamie Carragher, one of Liverpool’s greatest icons, will be honored by Athletic Bilbao with the “One-Club Man” award, recognizing his career-long loyalty to the Reds. The ceremony will take place on September 23, when Bilbao faces Girona at San Mamés Stadium, in the sixth round of La Liga.

Carragher Honored for a Lifetime at Liverpool

Carragher spent his entire professional career at Liverpool, from the academy in 1989 until his retirement in 2013. During that time, he won multiple national and international titles, including the UEFA Champions League in 2005, becoming a symbol of consistency and leadership.

Athletic Bilbao praised the defender’s career as an example of loyalty in modern football, where long stays at a single club are increasingly rare.

“It’s a great honor for me to be recognized by such a unique and fantastic club. I can’t wait to visit you at the end of the month. Thank you very much,” Carragher said on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

A Select Group of “One-Club Men”

Carragher is the tenth player to receive the recognition from Athletic Bilbao. The list of past honorees includes legendary names such as Paolo Maldini (Milan, 2016), Carles Puyol (Barcelona, 2018), Ryan Giggs (Manchester United, 2020), and most recently Giuseppe Bergomi (Inter Milan, 2024).

The Englishman highlighted the emotional meaning of the award:

“After winning the Champions League with Liverpool, being a one-club player is the biggest goal of my career. It’s an honor when Athletic Bilbao recognizes this. The club is respected by everyone in the football world.”

Athletic Bilbao and Liverpool Share Winning Starts

The tribute comes during a positive period for both clubs. In La Liga, Athletic Bilbao holds a 100% success rate and will face Alavés this Saturday (13), fighting with Real Madrid for the top spot.

In England, Liverpool, now managed by Arne Slot, also enjoys a perfect record. The Reds face Burnley on Sunday (14), at Turf Moor Stadium, looking to maintain first place in the Premier League.
