Newcastle have signed Yoane Wissa with 30 seconds remaining in the transfer window

Newcastle United pulled off one of the most dramatic moves of the Premier League transfer window, signing Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55 million with just 30 seconds remaining before the deadline. The Congolese striker arrives to fill the gap left by Alexander Isak, who completed a move to Liverpool earlier in the day.

Deal Completed in the Final Seconds

According to Sky Sports, Wissa’s registration was submitted at 8:59 PM, with the window closing at 9 PM sharp. The delay came after the striker reportedly missed a required signature on his contract. His agent managed to rush the paperwork through at the very last moment, ensuring the deal was sealed before the cut-off.

Wissa’s Journey to the Premier League Spotlight

Born in France, Wissa began his career with lower-division clubs such as Châteauroux, Angers, Laval, and Ajaccio, before making his breakthrough at Lorient between 2018 and 2021. His performances earned him a move to Brentford in August 2021, where he became a key player.

Over three seasons with the Bees, Wissa made 149 appearances, scoring 49 goals and providing 13 assists. His standout 2023/24 campaign saw him net 20 goals in 39 matches, making him one of Brentford’s most reliable attacking threats.

International Career with Congo

Although French-born, Wissa represents the Congo national team due to his heritage. Since making his debut in 2020, he has collected 27 caps and scored five goals, establishing himself as a regular for his country.

Competition and Role at Newcastle

At St. James’ Park, Wissa is expected to compete with youngster Osula for a place in the starting lineup, though his versatility allows him to operate across the frontline. His arrival gives manager Eddie Howe more attacking options as the Magpies look to recover from a difficult start to the season.

Newcastle’s Next Match

Still winless in the Premier League with two draws and one defeat, Newcastle will return to action on Saturday, September 13, when they host Wolverhampton at 11 AM (Brasília time). Fans are eager to see if Wissa will make his debut in front of the home crowd.
