FIFA blocks Laporte’s transfer from Al-Nassr to Athletic Bilbao, deal at risk

FIFA has rejected Athletic Bilbao’s request to register defender Aymeric Laporte, putting his high-profile return from Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in serious jeopardy. The Spanish club confirmed the decision in an official statement this Thursday (3), revealing that the move may collapse despite being agreed by all parties.

Transfer in Danger After FIFA’s Refusal

Athletic Bilbao explained that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) had asked FIFA to authorize the International Transfer Certificate (ITC) from the Saudi Arabian Football Federation. The document was necessary to complete Laporte’s registration for La Liga. However, FIFA denied the request, leaving the transfer on hold.

The Basque club emphasized that if the signing cannot be completed, the agreement will be voided without financial penalties for Athletic.

Athletic Still Seeking a Solution

Despite the setback, Bilbao has not abandoned hope. In its statement, the club stressed that it is “working to meet the interests of all parties Al-Nassr, the player, and Athletic Bilbao and studying all possibilities permitted by law.”

According to the club, the request was submitted on September 1, before the registration deadline, but technical issues beyond its control prevented completion. The following day, the RFEF appealed to FIFA for an exception, which was ultimately denied.

Laporte’s Contract and Career Path

Currently under contract with Al-Nassr until June 30, 2026, Laporte may now have to return to the Saudi Pro League if no solution is found.

The defender, however, has deep ties with Athletic Bilbao. A product of the club’s academy, he played at San Mamés from 2012 to 2017, winning the Spanish Super Cup before his transfer to Manchester City.
