Atlético Madrid stumble again with draw at Alavés and extend winless run in LaLiga

Atlético Madrid let another lead slip in Vitoria, drawing 1-1 with Deportivo Alavés. For the third consecutive LaLiga matchday, Diego Simeone’s side went ahead only to throw the advantage away, leaving them with just two points from a possible nine.

Another lead wasted

The pattern continues for Atlético. Giuliano Simeone  in a symbolic twist, scoring against the club of his father put the visitors in front early after capitalizing on a defensive error. But just minutes later, an unnecessary penalty from Alexander Sorloth allowed Alavés to equalize. Carlos Vicente had been left unmarked in the box, and the subsequent corner kick ended with the Norwegian striker’s clumsy foul on Tenaglia.

From there, Atlético lost momentum and failed to impose their rhythm.

Lack of solutions in attack

Despite holding possession, Atlético struggled to create clear chances. Sorloth, leading the line due to Baena’s injury, was largely ineffective, unable to control aerial balls or link play. In midfield, neither Cardoso nor Almada managed to dictate the tempo, while the bench offered little impact when called upon.

Griezmann hit the post in the second half and Sivera denied a late Sorloth header, but Atlético’s push lacked conviction.

Alavés stay solid, Atleti falter again

Alavés, guided by Blanco and Carlos Vicente, grew more comfortable as Atlético faltered. Coach Eduardo Coudet’s substitutions added energy, while Simeone’s changes failed to change the course of the game. The final 15 minutes saw heavy pressure from the visitors, but with no reward.

With the draw, Atlético Madrid now sit on just two points from their opening three matches, far adrift of the top of the table despite a relatively favorable schedule on paper.
