Real Madrid beat Mallorca after VAR drama with three disallowed goals

Xabi Alonso’s team remains perfect in La Liga despite early scare; Oviedo return to the spotlight after 24 years.
Real Madrid maintained their 100% record in La Liga this Saturday with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabéu. The match was filled with controversy as three goals were disallowed by VAR, leaving fans on edge until the final whistle.
VAR Steals the Spotlight
Early in the first half, Kylian Mbappé thought he had put Los Blancos ahead, but his strike was ruled out for offside. Minutes later, Vedat Muriqi stunned the home crowd, converting Pablo Torre’s corner in the 18th minute to give Mallorca the lead.
Real Madrid reacted quickly. Arda Güler equalized before Vinícius Júnior completed the turnaround before halftime. Even then, VAR continued to intervene: another Mbappé goal was disallowed for offside, while Güler saw a second effort chalked off in the second half for a controversial handball.
Key Performances
Portuguese midfielder Samu Costa came on in the 64th minute for Mallorca and nearly found the net, only to be denied by Álvaro Carreras, whose last-ditch block preserved Madrid’s lead. The young full-back was one of the standout performers for Xabi Alonso’s side.
Atlético and Others Struggle
Elsewhere in Spain, Atlético Madrid’s poor form continued as they were held 1-1 by Alavés. Giuliano Simeone opened the scoring, but Carlos Vicente equalized from the penalty spot within 15 minutes. Diego Simeone’s side now have just two points from their first three games.
The day also marked a historic moment for Real Oviedo, who won a La Liga match for the first time in 24 years, defeating Real Sociedad 1-0 with a goal from Dendoncker. For the visitors, Gonçalo Guedes featured in the final half hour.
Meanwhile, Sevilla secured their first win of the season, defeating Girona 2-0 away thanks to goals from Alfonso González and Isaac Romero.
Looking Ahead
Despite lingering doubts about their overall form under Alonso, Real Madrid top the table with maximum points, while Atlético face growing pressure after another disappointing result. The La Liga race is already shaping up with plenty of drama, both on and off the pitch.
