Van Dijk raises concerns over Liverpool’s defense ahead of Premier League derby with Arsenal

Liverpool may have started the season with two straight wins, but captain Virgil van Dijk has sounded the alarm before Sunday’s (31) crucial Premier League clash against Arsenal. Despite victories over Bournemouth and Newcastle, the Reds conceded four goals in just two games, a weakness that could prove costly against one of their main title rivals.
Defensive issues before a decisive clash
Speaking after the last match, Van Dijk admitted the team must improve quickly if they want to retain the title.
“I see that we have to keep improving to retain the title. Many teams have improved their squads, but it’s up to us to find consistency and win games. The matches against Arsenal are always intense,” the Dutch defender stated.
The Gunners arrive in high spirits after strengthening their squad with Viktor Gyökeres, who scored twice in the thrashing of Leeds.
A rivalry that defines titles
Liverpool and Arsenal were the main protagonists in the 2024/25 season, fighting neck-and-neck until Arne Slot’s men pulled away in the final stretch. The Reds finished 10 points clear, securing the trophy, while Arsenal suffered their third consecutive runner-up finish, after two years battling Manchester City.
Heavy investment in the market
Both sides have once again been aggressive in the transfer window.
- Liverpool spent €339.6M, highlighted by the €125M arrival of Florian Wirtz.
- Arsenal invested €293.5M, with Martín Zubimendi as their top signing (€70M).
With high-profile reinforcements and unbeaten starts, the match at Anfield promises to be one of the first big tests of the Premier League season.
