Guardiola warns Wolverhampton: “Without reinforcements, they will suffer in the Premier League”

Manchester City boss highlights Wolves’ struggles after opening-round defeat

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Premier League debut could be a sign of trouble ahead, as the team led by Vítor Pereira suffered a heavy 4-0 loss to Manchester City. Despite his side’s dominant victory, Pep Guardiola admitted concern about Wolves’ lack of depth and their ability to stay competitive in the top flight.

Guardiola’s Warning to Pereira

Speaking after the match, Pereira revealed that Guardiola privately questioned whether Wolves intend to strengthen before the transfer window closes.

“Pep himself asked me if the club wouldn’t sign two, three, or four quality players to raise the level. To compete in this league, if we’re not balanced in all positions, we’ll suffer,” Pereira told DAZN Portugal.

Wolves Hit Hard by Departures

The concern is justified: Wolves lost several key players who helped them avoid relegation last season. Matheus Cunha joined Manchester United, full-backs Rayan Aït-Nouri and Nélson Semedo departed for Manchester City and Fenerbahçe respectively, while Craig Dawson and Gonçalo Guedes also left the squad.

With these exits, Pereira is left with an even thinner roster, raising doubts about the club’s ability to handle a long and demanding campaign.

Reinforcements Arrive, but Questions Remain

So far, the recruitment has been modest. Wolves signed:

  • Fer López, 21-year-old midfielder from Celta Vigo,
  • David Möller Wolfe, Norwegian full-back from AZ Alkmaar,
  • Jhon Arias, Colombian playmaker from Fluminense, unveiled as the team’s new number 10.

Arias, who stood out in Brazilian football, carries high expectations but will need to adapt quickly to the intensity of the Premier League. His impact could define the club’s ambitions.

Survival Campaign Looming?

With a small squad and a grueling schedule ahead, Pereira admits the battle for survival may be inevitable. Even Guardiola, speaking as a rival coach, warned that without quality reinforcements, Wolves risk another relegation fight.
