Fred Caldeira criticizes Gyökeres after his Arsenal debut: “He handled the ball badly”

Viktor Gyökeres’ debut in the Premier League with Arsenal fell short of expectations. The Swedish striker, signed for €65.8 million from Sporting CP, started in the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Manchester United but was substituted in the second half after a timid performance.

Harsh Words From Fred Caldeira

TNT Sports correspondent Fred Caldeira did not spare criticism when analyzing the forward’s first appearance for Arsenal. Speaking on The Best Football in the World, he highlighted Gyökeres’ mistakes and lack of influence in the derby.

“Gyökeres’ first impressions are poor. Yesterday was a very bad game. He mishandled the ball, spent 60 minutes on the field without a single shot on target, and tripped over the ball more than he completed passes. But it’s the start of the season, he still needs to adapt to the new team and league,” said Caldeira.

Arteta Preaches Patience

Manager Mikel Arteta, however, defended his new signing and called for calm. According to the Spanish coach, Arsenal failed to supply Gyökeres with the service he needed to perform.

“The game didn’t favor him. We couldn’t connect the final passes that put him in good positions. It’s something we’ll work on,” Arteta explained.

The statistics confirm the struggles: Gyökeres had only three touches in the box, lost 10 of 13 duels, and ended with no shots on goal.

Heavy Investment Raises Expectations

Arsenal’s board sees Gyökeres as the missing piece in their hunt for the Premier League title. The €65.8 million investment makes him the club’s second-most expensive signing this window, behind only midfielder Martín Zubimendi.

The pressure is high, especially after the striker’s incredible numbers at Sporting CP last season: 54 goals and 13 assists in 52 matches, improving on his already impressive debut campaign of 43 goals and 14 assists.
