Manchester United considering Mike Maignan transfer with Højlund as a possible bargaining chip

Mike Maignan enters Manchester United’s focus; Rasmus Hojlund could be a bargaining chip

Manchester United have placed AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan on their radar and could use striker Rasmus Højlund as part of a potential swap deal, according to French journalist Sébastien Vidal. The Red Devils are exploring ways to strengthen their squad before the September transfer deadline, with the goalkeeping position emerging as a priority.

Swap deal under discussion

Milan have expressed interest in Højlund, and United see this as an opportunity to negotiate for Maignan, who is considered one of Serie A’s most reliable goalkeepers. A deal of this nature would mark a bold move from United’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, and reshape the balance of Erik ten Hag’s successor Rúben Amorim’s squad.

Goalkeeper doubts at Old Trafford

Neither André Onana nor Altay Bayındır has fully convinced Amorim as Manchester United’s long-term number one. The club is therefore evaluating alternatives to bring more security between the posts. Alongside Maignan, names such as Emiliano Martínez, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens have been linked, with Lammens seen as a more cost-effective option.

Financial considerations and summer spending

United’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper comes after a heavy investment in attack, with the arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško for more than £200 million. With the frontline reinforced, attention has now shifted to the midfield and goalkeeper positions. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba had been considered, but a major move for the midfielder this summer appears unlikely.

Maignan a priority target

The French goalkeeper remains at the top of United’s wishlist, with the possibility of Højlund being included in negotiations giving the club a potential bargaining advantage. With the transfer window closing soon, United are expected to push for clarity in talks with Milan.
