Barcelona manager Hansi Flick “surprised” and unhappy with Iñigo Martínez’s transfer to Al-Nassr

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has expressed frustration over defender Iñigo Martínez’s sudden transfer to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, calling the departure an unexpected setback for the team’s leadership structure.

Flick Regrets Losing ‘Fantastic Player and Leader’

Speaking at a press conference, Flick admitted the move caught him off guard.

“It was a surprise to me, but I completely understood. I didn’t like his departure because he’s a fantastic player, one of the leaders in the locker room, a great player, and a great person,” the German manager said.

Martínez, who was being considered as a candidate for the captain’s armband amid ongoing controversy involving goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, was viewed as a key figure in the squad. Ultimately, Ronald Araújo was named captain for the season.

Sudden Switch to Saudi Arabia

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Al-Nassr approached Martínez with an immediate offer, prompting the Spaniard to leave Barcelona just before the start of the new season. He signed a contract until June 2026, with an option to extend for another year.

Two Productive Seasons in Catalonia

The 33-year-old spent two years at Camp Nou, featuring prominently last season with 46 appearances 45 of them starts along with three goals and five assists. His consistent performances made his departure even more disappointing for Flick.

Career Path Before Barça

A product of Real Sociedad’s youth academy, Martínez made his professional debut in 2011/12 and spent seven seasons with the Basque club. He later joined Athletic Bilbao for six campaigns before signing with Barcelona in 2023.
