Villarreal target Marco Asensio tries to block Aston Villa loan renewal

Villarreal are preparing a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Marco Asensio, aiming to beat Aston Villa to his signature after the Spanish midfielder’s impressive loan spell in the Premier League. According to Marca, coach Marcelino wants the 28-year-old to add technical quality and experience to his squad following Thierno Barry’s transfer to Everton.

Two possible destinations for Asensio

Dropped from PSG’s plans last season, Asensio joined Aston Villa on loan, where he rediscovered his form and made a strong impact. Now, the Spaniard faces a choice: return to his homeland to join Villarreal’s “Yellow Submarine” or extend his stay in England under Unai Emery.

Aston Villa push for loan renewal

At Villa Park, Asensio formed a productive partnership with Marcus Rashford, contributing nine goals in 21 appearances. Although the club narrowly missed Champions League qualification, Emery remains keen to keep him, having informed PSG of their desire to renew his loan. The coach sees the midfielder as a vital part of his plans for the upcoming season.

PSG departures expected

Asensio is one of several players excluded from Luis Enrique’s long-term plans at PSG. Defenders Presnel Kimpembe and goalkeeper Arnau Tenas are also set to leave the French champions in the current transfer window.

Villarreal or Villa: Which is the better fit?

Villarreal, featuring young stars like Yéremy Pino and Alberto Moleiro, could offer Asensio a leading role both on and off the pitch. However, adapting to Marcelino’s tactical system would be essential. Aston Villa, on the other hand, provide continuity in a familiar environment under a manager he already trusts, making them a strong contender to retain his services.
