Julian Draxler eyes return to Schalke 04 despite success in Qatar

German international Julian Draxler has expressed interest in a potential return to Schalke 04, the club where he began his professional career. Despite finding success in the Qatari league with Al Ahli, the 31-year-old remains emotionally attached to the Bundesliga side.
Draxler Reflects on Career, Future at 35
In an interview with German newspaper Bild, Draxler revealed that the idea of rejoining Schalke 04 has crossed his mind, although no formal talks have taken place. The midfielder, who will be 35 when his current contract with Al Ahli ends, admitted uncertainty about whether he would still have the physical and technical capabilities to contribute meaningfully in a competitive European league.
“It’s a thought I’ve had, especially before I moved to Qatar,” Draxler told Bild. “But at 35, I’m not sure if I could deliver the same level of performance Schalke deserves.”
Standout Performances at Al Ahli
Since joining Al Ahli, Draxler has been in top form, registering 12 goals and 9 assists in just 18 league appearances, making him one of the standout performers in the Qatar Stars League. His resurgence has not gone unnoticed by fans and former teammates in Germany.
Despite playing outside Europe, Draxler has managed to maintain his sharpness and consistency, sparking speculation over a final European chapter in his career.
Market Value and Transfer Outlook
Draxler’s current market value is estimated at €3.8 million (R$24.4 million), according to Transfermarkt. While modest compared to his peak years at Paris Saint-Germain and Wolfsburg, the valuation reflects his steady output and experience.
A return to Schalke 04 now in a rebuilding phase would not only bring sentimental value but also veteran leadership. However, logistical factors, including his salary expectations and Schalke’s financial state, could complicate negotiations if they ever materialize.
