Toluca targets River Plate midfielder Santiago Simón in ambitious transfer bid

Fresh off a triumphant Clausura 2025 title and a CONCACAF Champions League victory, Toluca is looking to bolster its squad once again this time with River Plate’s Santiago Simón.

Negotiations Underway for 50% of Player’s Rights

According to journalist César Luis Merlo, Toluca has opened talks with River Plate to acquire 50% of Simón’s economic rights. The move comes as part of the club’s preparations for the Apertura 2025, with manager Antonio Mohamed keen to maintain momentum following the team’s recent silverware.

The 23-year-old Argentine midfielder is viewed as a versatile option who could add depth and creativity to Toluca’s midfield as the team targets back-to-back domestic titles.

Simón’s Rise at River Plate

Simón debuted for River Plate in 2021 and has since amassed 8,394 minutes, 6 goals, and 16 assists in official matches. His list of honors includes two Argentine League titles, two Copa Libertadores (Champions League) victories, and a Super Cup.

His current contract with River runs through December 31, 2026, meaning any agreement would require a structured and strategic offer to meet both the club’s and player’s expectations.

European and South American Competition

While Toluca is actively pursuing Simón, the midfielder has also drawn interest from Europe and South America. Clubs such as Girona (Spain), Elche, Rosario Central, and domestic rivals Boca Juniors are all reportedly keeping tabs on his availability.

With an estimated market value of €4.5 million (R$28.9 million), Simón is seen as a high-potential investment. Toluca’s offer, involving only partial rights, could be a creative solution to beat out the competition.
