Frenkie de Jong and Barcelona far from reaching an agreement on contract renewal

Dutch star’s future uncertain as salary dispute stalls negotiations; Hansi Flick pushes for immediate resolution
FC Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong remain far apart in contract renewal talks, raising the possibility that the Dutch midfielder could leave the club by the end of next season on a free transfer.
Despite being a cornerstone in Hansi Flick’s midfield plans, De Jong has not agreed to extend his deal, which expires in June 2026. The club’s financial struggles, coupled with the player’s insistence on maintaining his current salary, have created a standoff that could impact Barça’s long-term strategy.
Contract talks stall over salary cut
De Jong, 28, is reportedly happy at the club and fully integrated into life in Catalonia. His entourage has made it clear: he wants to stay. However, he refuses to accept a salary reduction, citing prior financial concessions during the pandemic and rejecting recent offers from other European clubs.
Barcelona, still walking a financial tightrope under the shadow of Financial Fair Play regulations, is unable to meet his current wage demands without jeopardizing their balance sheet. Club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco are actively involved in the negotiations, but a breakthrough has yet to materialize.
Flick considers De Jong “non-negotiable”
New head coach Hansi Flick has made it clear to the board: renewing Frenkie de Jong is his top priority for the summer. He sees the midfielder as essential to the tactical spine of the team and believes that any other transfers must wait until De Jong’s future is secured.
“Without Frenkie, the project loses both structure and leadership on the field,” a club insider revealed, highlighting how important the No. 21 is to Flick’s system.
Tensions rise as deadline looms
Internally, Barcelona had hoped to wrap up renewal talks before the end of July. With just one day left in the month, no agreement is in sight. Meanwhile, speculation is growing inside the dressing room, with some believing the player is holding out for a loyalty bonus or improved terms before committing long-term.
For now, De Jong remains calm, focusing on preseason preparations and avoiding public comments. But unless the club can find a financial solution that satisfies both parties, his future may lie elsewhere in 2026 and possibly without Barcelona receiving a single euro in return.
