Jorge Jesus clarifies the signing of João Félix and denies friction with Benfica

After Al-Nassr’s 2-1 preseason victory over Toulouse, head coach Jorge Jesus addressed the club’s recent acquisition of João Félix, clarifying the player’s arrival and denying any conflict with Benfica, his former club.

No Tension with Benfica, Says Jesus

Félix, 25, was heavily linked with a return to Benfica this summer, but ultimately joined Al-Nassr from Chelsea. Jorge Jesus was quick to distance Benfica from the transfer, emphasizing that negotiations were exclusively with Chelsea, Félix’s parent club.

“João was on the market, and we needed a player with his characteristics,” Jesus explained post-match. “We didn’t take him from Benfica; we signed him from Chelsea. The only player I took from Benfica was Marcos Leonardo — for €40 million.”

Félix Debuts in Friendly Win Over Toulouse

The Portuguese international made his debut in Al-Nassr’s friendly clash in Austria. While his performance was modest, the match saw Cristiano Ronaldo score a stunning equalizer, canceling out Gboho’s opener for Toulouse. Substitute Maran later secured the win with a headed goal in the second half.

Félix was substituted early in the second half as he continues to adapt to the team and reach full match fitness.

Preparations for Competitive Season Nearly Complete

With the 2025/26 campaign approaching, Jorge Jesus believes Al-Nassr is nearing peak physical condition. The squad, now featuring several high-profile signings, will continue to train intensely ahead of their first official match on August 19 — a Saudi Super Cup semifinal clash against Al-Ittihad.

Félix is expected to play a central role in Al-Nassr’s campaign, although Jesus acknowledged that the striker is still adjusting to life in Saudi Arabia.
