Manchester United submit €40 million bid for Sporting midfielder Morten Hjulmand

Manchester United have officially made a €40 million bid for Morten Hjulmand, Sporting CP’s midfield standout and former key player under new Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim, according to Calciomercato.
Hjulmand Emerges as Amorim’s Priority Target
Seen as a critical piece in Amorim’s Sporting success, Hjulmand is now on the radar of Manchester United as the Portuguese manager looks to rebuild the club’s midfield. The 24-year-old Dane played a pivotal role at Sporting, both as a tactical anchor and team leader, quickly earning the captain’s armband after joining in August 2023.
Sporting Holding Firm on €50M Valuation
United’s opening offer of €40 million (approx. R$257.9 million) falls short of Sporting’s €50 million (R$322.3 million) asking price. The Portuguese club, under no financial pressure to sell, is holding firm especially with Hjulmand under contract until June 2028.
While United push to close a deal, they face competition from Juventus, who are also pursuing the midfielder at the request of head coach Igor Tudor. A bidding war could develop in the coming days.
Strategic Reinforcements Under Ruben Amorim
This transfer marks part of a targeted recruitment strategy under Ruben Amorim. After landing Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, the Red Devils turned their attention to the midfield, hoping to secure a player who already understands Amorim’s system.
The club had previously shown interest in Alexander Isak, but financial limitations narrowed their focus. Finalizing a move for Hjulmand would round out the squad in line with Amorim’s tactical blueprint.
Garnacho’s Future in Doubt
Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho’s future at Old Trafford is uncertain. Although Chelsea have submitted an offer, Manchester United were reportedly unimpressed by the valuation and may hold out for a better proposal or opt to keep the Argentine winger.
