Real Madrid offered to pay for the termination of David Alaba’s contract, but the defender refuses to leave

Defender determined to see out deal despite reduced role and €22.5 million salary

David Alaba has rejected Real Madrid’s offer to terminate his contract early, despite the club’s willingness to pay a portion of the remaining wages. The Austrian international, whose current deal runs until June 2026, has no intention of leaving the Spanish giants and plans to fulfill his contract in full.

Real Madrid frustrated by Alaba’s stance

According to Diario AS, the Madrid board had approached Alaba with a proposal to part ways amicably, aiming to free up space on the wage bill. However, the 32-year-old defender turned down the offer, insisting he remains committed to the team and is confident he can still contribute under Xabi Alonso’s leadership.

Alaba’s refusal complicates Real Madrid’s strategy to reduce costs ahead of a new season in which the squad has already welcomed Kylian Mbappé, whose salary significantly impacts the club’s financial structure.

Alaba’s salary a major obstacle

Alaba currently earns €22.5 million per season, making him the second-highest earner in the squad behind Mbappé. His high salary, coupled with persistent injury problems, has made him a target for a potential departure. The Austrian played only a limited role last season due to long injury layoffs.

Club executives view his wages as a potential resource to reinvest in elite reinforcements or youth development, but those funds remain tied up as long as Alaba remains under contract.

Alaba insists he can still contribute

Despite concerns about his physical condition, Alaba reportedly spoke with head coach Xabi Alonso, expressing confidence in his ability to help the team with his experience and leadership. The defender believes he can still offer value in a rotational role, especially during a long season with multiple competitions.

What’s next for Real Madrid and Alaba?

Unless Real Madrid can reach a new agreement with the player or find a club willing to take on his wages, David Alaba is expected to remain with Los Blancos until the end of his deal in July 2026. His situation highlights the club’s challenges in managing aging stars with large contracts as it transitions into a new era.
