Christensen refuses to leave Barcelona, forcing Deco to consider alternative exits

Danish defender wants to stay despite not being in Hansi Flick’s first-team plans
Andreas Christensen has informed Barcelona that he has no intention of leaving the club, despite not being guaranteed a starting role under new manager Hansi Flick. The 29-year-old Danish centre-back is under contract until June 2026 and is determined to see it through, even if that complicates the club’s financial strategy.
Barcelona plans blocked by Christensen’s stance
According to Sport, Barcelona had initially hoped to offload a defender this summer to ease their wage bill. However, Christensen has already rejected several transfer approaches. Sporting director Deco had targeted the defender’s departure as part of the club’s cost-cutting measures, but now may be forced to consider other players for sale.
The club’s leadership is particularly concerned about Christensen’s high salary, which could strain Barcelona’s ongoing efforts to meet La Liga’s financial fair play requirements.
Deco may target midfielders instead
With Christensen unwilling to negotiate an exit or a contract extension, Deco is reportedly turning his attention to the midfield, where a forced sale might now become necessary. Sport notes that Christensen is not open to any move, believing he can still convince Flick of his value to the first team.
This development adds pressure on Deco, who is already handling other delicate contract situations, including the uncertain future of Frenkie de Jong.
Christensen’s injury record and limited appearances
Christensen’s refusal to leave comes despite a difficult 2023/24 season. The defender made only six appearances due to injuries, including a significant setback in March when he suffered a right leg injury. His lack of minutes and recurring physical issues had made him a logical candidate for departure, but the player remains committed to staying in Barcelona.
