Messi angered by MLS punishment and may reconsider renewal with Inter Miami

A controversial MLS disciplinary decision has triggered unrest at Inter Miami, with club owner Jorge Mas warning that the fallout could jeopardize Lionel Messi’s contract renewal. The Argentine icon was suspended for one match missing Saturday’s clash against league leaders FC Cincinnati after skipping the MLS All-Star Game due to reported physical discomfort.

The punishment, deemed “draconian” by Mas, has left Messi “deeply angry,” raising fears that the relationship between player and league may be permanently damaged.

“He’s very upset. I hope this doesn’t have long-term consequences,” Mas told U.S. media on Thursday, expressing concern over the timing and severity of the ruling.

Suspension for Missing All-Star Festivity Draws Criticism

Messi, along with teammate Jordi Alba, did not participate in the All-Star Game earlier this week, citing muscle fatigue. Nevertheless, Major League Soccer enforced its strict regulation that mandates suspension for unexcused absences.

Mas questioned the rationale of the rule: “They came here to play and compete, not to sit out critical matches for missing an exhibition game,” he said. “If this happens again next year, we’ll make the same decision. It’s unsustainable to risk our season for a friendly.”

Inter Miami, currently fifth in the Eastern Conference, faces a pivotal fixture against Cincinnati, making Messi’s absence all the more damaging.

League Promises Review of Controversial Policy

MLS Commissioner Don Garber responded to the uproar by pledging to “carefully evaluate the policy” and hold discussions with players and clubs in the coming weeks. A rule revision now appears likely following backlash involving the league’s most high-profile figure.

The league’s decision has highlighted a growing rift between commercial ambitions and competitive integrity as clubs juggle regular season demands with showcase events.

Messi’s Contract Situation and Transfer Interest

Messi, 37, is currently under contract with Inter Miami until December 2025. However, as per FIFA regulations, he is eligible to sign a pre-contract with another club as early as January.

Speculation is already mounting over a potential departure. Sources close to the player say former clubs FC Barcelona, Newell’s Old Boys, and Saudi Pro League sides are monitoring the situation closely.

If tensions between Messi and MLS leadership persist, a move before the end of his current deal could become more than just speculation.
