Rivalry between Gonzalo and Endrick intensifies after Spaniard is favorite for Real Madrid’s number 9 shirt

The rivalry between Gonzalo García and Endrick has taken a new turn, with the Spanish striker emerging as the frontrunner to wear Real Madrid’s iconic number 9 shirt, previously linked to the young Brazilian. According to Diario AS, Gonzalo’s standout performances at the Club World Cup have shifted internal sentiment at Valdebebas.

Despite early expectations that Endrick would inherit the role following Kylian Mbappé’s decision to wear Luka Modrić’s former number, García’s form under new manager Xabi Alonso has made him the preferred option at least for now.

Club World Cup Changed the Equation

Gonzalo García scored four goals in six appearances during the tournament and became one of Alonso’s most trusted attacking options. His performance contrasted sharply with Endrick, who spent most of the competition on the bench.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and the club’s top brass have yet to make an official decision on the number 9 shirt, but internal discussions are ongoing. A resolution is expected in the coming weeks.

Endrick’s Frustrating Start at Madrid

Endrick, who joined from Palmeiras with immense expectations, showed flashes of brilliance during Carlo Ancelotti’s final season notably in the Copa del Rey but struggled for consistency across all competitions.

In total, the 17-year-old striker recorded seven goals in 37 appearances, amounting to just 847 minutes of game time. Under Xabi Alonso, hopes were high for increased opportunities, but so far, Gonzalo García’s emergence has cast a shadow over the Brazilian’s progression.

Interest from Across Europe

While Endrick remains committed to succeeding in Madrid, interest from other clubs continues to grow. Valencia, Fiorentina, and Olympique de Marseille are among those keeping tabs on the forward’s situation, hoping that a lack of minutes could open the door for a potential loan move.

For now, however, Endrick is determined to fight for his place, even as Gonzalo García tightens his grip on Real Madrid’s future in the striker position.
