Jewel in the works: Barcelona opens talks with Roma to offload Marc Bernal

AS Roma have opened negotiations with Barcelona to sign promising midfielder Marc Bernal, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. The 18-year-old La Masia product made his senior debut under Hansi Flick but was sidelined early by a long-term injury, putting his future at the Camp Nou in doubt.

Marc Bernal’s Short but Impressive Start

Before his injury, Bernal had made an exciting start to the 2024/25 season. He featured in three consecutive LaLiga matches, including standout performances against Valencia and Athletic Bilbao. His composure and passing drew praise, and he looked set to earn a regular spot in Flick’s midfield rotation alongside Pedri.

However, disaster struck in his third game a hard-fought 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano. In stoppage time, Bernal suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), ruling him out for 308 days and forcing him to miss 58 matches.

Roma See Opportunity Amid Setback

Despite the injury, Roma are keen to capitalize on the Spanish talent’s untapped potential. It remains unclear whether the deal will be a permanent transfer or a loan, but discussions are underway as the Giallorossi look to bolster their midfield depth.

During Bernal’s recovery, Barça saw other young talents including Marc Casadó and Eric García step up, making Bernal’s path to first-team minutes more complicated.

Market Value on the Rise

Even with limited minutes, Bernal’s market value has surged. Originally estimated at €1 million, his current valuation stands at €5 million, reflecting the high regard in which he’s held within scouting circles.

With Barcelona needing to trim their squad and manage young talent development, Bernal’s move to Serie A could offer the midfielder the consistent playing time he needs to reignite his career.
