Barcelona goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen to undergo surgery and be out for three months

German international confirms procedure as Joan García prepares to step in as first choice
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has announced he will undergo back surgery, with doctors estimating a three-month recovery period. The 32-year-old veteran, who missed much of last season due to persistent pain, made the announcement in a personal statement on social media.
“Physically, I feel in good shape, although unfortunately I’m not pain-free,” Ter Stegen wrote. “Doctors believe it will take about three months as a precaution, to avoid risks.”
Absence Reinforces Barcelona’s Goalkeeping Transition
The surgery comes just weeks after Barça completed the signing of Joan García from Espanyol. With doubts already mounting around Ter Stegen’s fitness, the club had been planning a transition in goal under new manager Hansi Flick.
García, 23, had already been training as Flick’s preferred starter ahead of the 2025/26 season, and Ter Stegen’s continued absence now cements the young Spaniard’s place as Barcelona’s No. 1.
Emotional Statement from Ter Stegen
In his public note, Ter Stegen acknowledged the emotional toll of being sidelined:
“Emotionally, it hurts me deeply not to be able to support the team at this time. But don’t worry I’ll be back!”
Despite the setback, he expressed gratitude to fans and assured that he remains committed to returning fully fit.
Transfer Interest Likely to Cool
Prior to the latest injury news, Ter Stegen had drawn interest from clubs like AC Milan and Manchester City, both exploring options for an experienced and technically skilled goalkeeper.
However, the timing of the surgery and the extended recovery period is expected to cool off potential transfer negotiations. The German’s focus will now shift entirely to regaining match fitness and reclaiming his spot at Barcelona if the door remains open.
