Florian Wirtz’s father explains why he chose Liverpool over Bayern Munich: ‘Vision made the difference’

£116M move to Anfield becomes the biggest transfer of the 2025 European summer
Liverpool have pulled off one of the most stunning signings of the 2025 transfer window by securing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a £116 million deal, outbidding domestic powerhouse Bayern Munich and beating interest from Manchester City and Real Madrid.
The move sent shockwaves through European football, as many expected the German prodigy to remain in the Bundesliga and join Bayern. However, the 21-year-old chose to make the leap to the Premier League, where Liverpool’s vision and manager Arne Slot played a decisive role.
“Only Bayern and Liverpool Were Serious”
In an interview with Der Spiegel, Florian Wirtz’s father and representative, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, opened up about the dramatic transfer saga.
“There were several interested clubs, but in the end, only Bayern and Liverpool were serious options,” he said. “What tipped the scales was Liverpool’s long-term plan for Florian not just money.”
The comment all but confirmed speculation that Manchester City and Real Madrid never made concrete advances, leaving the Reds and Bayern Munich to battle for the attacking midfielder’s signature.
Arne Slot’s Tactical Vision Won Wirtz Over
According to Hans-Joachim, it was Arne Slot’s direct involvement in the talks that helped Liverpool seal the deal. The Dutch manager, who took over following Jürgen Klopp’s departure, made a strong impression on the Wirtz camp.
“Arne Slot impressed Florian with what he did on the field,” Hans-Joachim explained. “His tactical plan was clear. He explained how Florian would fit into his system, and how he would evolve at Liverpool.”
Slot reportedly emphasized a high-pressing, possession-heavy style that aligns with Wirtz’s natural strengths as a creative playmaker. The club’s sporting project, combined with the intensity and pace of English football, helped seal the player’s decision.
Liverpool Send Clear Message After Title Win
Fresh off winning the 2024–25 Premier League title, Liverpool’s swift and aggressive move for Wirtz is more than just a signing it’s a statement. The club is not only preparing to defend their crown, but also building a long-term foundation with Europe’s top young talent.
Florian Wirtz now becomes one of the most expensive signings in Premier League history, and arguably the most significant German export since Kai Havertz.
