Boxing Day will pit two Portuguese coaches against each other in the Premier League , with Wolverhampton , now coached by Vítor Pereira, receiving a visit from Manchester United . In the pre-match press conference, Ruben Amorim was once again confronted with the case of Marcus Rashford , who has been left out of the squad for the last three games.
“It’s my decision [to have the player in the squad] . He wants to play, he’s trying. It’s my decision. It’s just my decision. I’ve spoken to a lot of players individually during training, so I try to do things and I’m doing them my way, which is the only way I know. If I don’t do it, I’ll lose myself, and I won’t lose myself. I know what I’m doing,” assured the Portuguese, who believes that this situation with the forward is not detrimental to the team.
“I don’t think so. Not for me. Not for the other players, because they’re there during training. They understand and that’s the key thing. For the media and other people, I can’t control that… I’m very clear in my message. Everyone at Carrington knows what I’m talking about and what I want from Marcus and everyone else, so it’s not a distraction for us. Maybe it is for the media, but that’s not my concern,” he stressed.
Regarding the team’s current situation, coming off a heavy defeat (0-3) at home to Bournemouth , Amorim expressed confidence in a brighter future.
“I just want to win games. I know there is a long-term project and we are focused on it, but I also know that in big clubs you don’t have much time and you have to win games. I have a clear idea of the responsibility I have here. I know what I am going to do, that is very clear to me. That is why I feel so… I don’t want to say relaxed, because I am very frustrated like the fans, but I know what to do. We have to solve some problems, step by step, finding solutions for everything. But it is a very difficult time, we understand the fans and we are going to fight against it”, he assured.
