Madrid weighing defensive changes as both full-backs resist transfer exit

With Rodrygo attracting Liverpool’s interest, Real Madrid are also evaluating possible sales of left-backs Fran García and Ferland Mendy, according to Diario AS. However, both defenders have reportedly made it clear they do not want to leave the Santiago Bernabéu this summer.

Fran García Gaining Market Value

Fran García’s performances during the 2025 Club World Cup  where he played all six matches, scored a goal, and provided an assist have drawn interest from AC Milan, increasing his market value significantly.

Madrid are open to negotiating the 24-year-old for €25 to €30 million, potentially capitalizing on his rising stock. He remains under contract until June 2027.

Mendy’s Situation and Valuation

Ferland Mendy, meanwhile, has struggled with injuries and has not played since April, missing the tail end of the season. The 30-year-old Frenchman is reportedly valued between €10 million and €14 million, and is also under contract until 2027.

Although the club is open to selling Mendy, the player’s camp has so far shown no intention of leaving.

Madrid’s Left-Back Dilemma

With Álvaro Carreras arriving this summer as the most expensive left-back in club history, and Trent Alexander-Arnold also joining the squad, Real Madrid now face an overload at the full-back position.

The club’s internal plan seems to involve parting with one of their current left-backs either García or Mendy but the board faces resistance from both sides.

What’s Next?

  • Fran García: Attracting concrete interest; price tag: €25–30M
  • Ferland Mendy: Open for sale; injury-prone; price tag: €10–14M
  • Contract status: Both players tied to Real Madrid until 2027
  • Club position: Eager to offload one full-back to balance the squad

The next few weeks could be decisive as Real Madrid attempt to finalize their roster under Xabi Alonso. Market demand suggests Fran García is the more likely to depart, especially if a firm offer from Milan materializes.
