Zeca eyes second title as underdogs in Porto Alegre showdown

The Recopa Gaúcha 2024 is set for a local derby this Tuesday (8), with Grêmio hosting São José at the Arena do Grêmio, kickoff at 7:30 p.m.. While Tricolor is seeking its fifth Recopa title, the team from the North Zone of Porto Alegre is determined to make history by securing its second trophy in the competition.

Why This Match Matters

The Recopa Gaúcha pits the Gauchão champion (Grêmio) against the FGF Cup winner (São José). Despite being the underdogs, Zeca enters the match with determination and tactical identity.

Currently playing in Série D, São José sits 3rd in Group A8, with 19 points in 11 matches, firmly in the race for a playoff spot. Although they suffered a 1-0 loss to Guarany de Bagé last Saturday, their overall form remains strong.

Coach Sandro Resende Returns

The recent return of coach Sandro Resende, who led São José to win the 2024 Gauchão Sub-20 title defeating Grêmio in the final adds intrigue to this matchup. The 48-year-old replaced Gabardo Jr., who departed for Anápolis-GO in Série C.

Resende is well-known at the club and trusted by the players, providing a boost in morale and tactical clarity at a key moment in the season.

Tactical Identity: 3-5-2 Formation

São José is expected to line up in a 3-5-2 system a tactical setup that emphasizes defensive organization and quick transitions. The likely starting XI includes:

Fábio;
Marcão, Rafael Dumas, Jadson;
Danielzinho, Jhonata Varela, Nonato, Estêvão (or Venício), Ângelo;
Renê and Giovane Gomez.

The team may opt for Venício in place of Estêvão to bolster midfield marking and contain Grêmio’s creativity.

 Zeca’s Goals

For São José, the Recopa is more than a trophy it’s a statement. A win would reaffirm the club’s growing strength in Rio Grande do Sul football and serve as a major morale booster heading into the decisive phase of Série D.

With recent success at the youth level and a proven system, São José is not just showing up they’re showing up to compete.
