MUNICH – The standoff between Dayot Upamecano and Bayern Munich has reached a critical boiling point. According to Sky Sport Germany, the Bavarian giants suspect that the French international is deliberately stalling on a “generous” contract extension in hopes of receiving an official call from Real Madrid.

Despite Bayern offering a multimillion-euro package to secure his future, the 27-year-old defender has yet to put pen to paper, creating an atmosphere of intense frustration within the Allianz Arena.

The “Generous” Offer and Board Impatience

Bayern’s management, led by Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, has reportedly pulled out all the stops to keep the Frenchman. The board has already approved a deal worth over €16 million (approx. R$ 100 million) per season, viewing Upamecano as the perfect long-term partner for Jonathan Tah.

“The board decided not to hold back on the offer,” reports suggest, but the optimism felt in early January has been replaced by an urgent ultimatum. Bayern executives have now informed Upamecano’s camp that a definitive answer is required within the coming weeks of February.

Real Madrid: Interest or Leverage?

The shadow of Florentino Pérez looms large over the negotiations. Real Madrid has identified the signing of a world-class center-back as a “top priority” for the 2026/27 season. While Upamecano remains high on their radar, recent reports indicate that Madrid briefly cooled their interest due to the player’s high salary demands.

However, the French defender’s camp appears to believe that a formal offer from the Spanish giants is still possible, leading to the current impasse in Munich.

Vincent Kompany’s Vision

Manager Vincent Kompany remains a staunch supporter of the number 2, viewing him as a “pillar” of his defensive system. Bayern’s urgency stems from the desire to avoid a “free agent” saga similar to those of David Alaba or Niklas Süle in the past. If Upamecano does not renew by the end of February, the club may be forced to consider a summer sale to avoid losing him for nothing.
