The Rumours I Heard’ – Rene Meulensteen Makes Bold Sandro Tonali Claim Amid Man Utd Midfield Search

Manchester United’s search for a midfield anchor has taken a fresh twist following comments from a key figure of the Sir Alex Ferguson era. As Ruben Amorim looks to overhaul his squad this summer, Sandro Tonali has emerged as a name that “fits the bill” for the Red Devils.

Despite a busy 2025, United’s engine room remains a point of contention. While the likes of Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba have been heavily scouted, former United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen believes the solution could lie at St James’ Park.

The “Italian Rumours” and United’s Opportunity

Speaking to BetGoat, Meulensteen revealed that while whispers of a return to Serie A persist for Tonali, his quality is undeniable for a club of United’s stature.

“Sandro Tonali is a good player and he’s done really well for Newcastle,” Meulensteen stated. “The rumours I heard were that he possibly wanted to go back to Italy, but he’s definitely a good player who understands that role in midfield.”

For United, Tonali represents the technical profile they’ve lacked: a progressive passer who can dictate the tempo while allowing Kobbie Mainoo the freedom to push forward. Meulensteen warned, however, that any new arrival must not hinder the development of United’s homegrown star.

Newcastle’s Stance: A “Perfect” Relationship?

The links to Old Trafford (and previously Arsenal) come at a time when Tonali seems to be rediscovering his best form in Tyneside. Following a brace in Newcastle’s FA Cup victory over Aston Villa, the Italian midfielder was quick to shut down talk of a rift with Eddie Howe.

“People spoke about our relationship, but I work every day with the gaffer… our relationship is perfect,” Tonali told Chronicle Live.

The Midfield Shortlist: Who Else is in the Frame?

If a deal for Tonali proves too complex due to Newcastle’s high valuation, Meulensteen suggested United look at other Premier League-proven engines:

  • Joelinton (Newcastle): Described as a “massive motor” and a winner.
  • Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace): Praised for his elite ability to play forward passes.
  • Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest): A rising talent who has impressed this season.

With United desperate to return to the Champions League spots, the decision between a veteran presence like Tonali or a high-potential youth like Wharton will define the first full summer of the INEOS-Amorim partnership.
