Next Man Utd Manager: Why Diego Simeone is Still the ‘Elite’ Choice to Replace Ruben Amorim’s Legacy

Manchester United find themselves at a crossroads. While Michael Carrick has brought a sense of “simplicity and effectiveness” to Old Trafford as interim boss, the calls for a world-class, permanent successor are growing louder. Leading the charge is club legend Roy Keane, who remains adamant that Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone is the man to restore “havoc” to the Theatre of Dreams.

Despite Carrick’s impressive run securing vital points against Manchester City and Arsenal pundits argue that United need more than just stability; they need a transformation in personality.

The Case for Simeone: “Good Havoc”

Roy Keane has long been a vocal admirer of Simeone’s confrontational and high-demand style. Speaking on Stick to Football, Keane dismissed the notion that the Argentine is purely a defensive coach, pointing to Atletico’s ability to “play a bit” when it matters most.

“I’d like to see Simeone go in there,” Keane stated. “He would just create havoc, but good havoc. He’d rock up to  place and say, ‘This is how you do things.’ I’d just like to see his personality and his track record.”

Why Andy Townsend Backs the Argentine

Former Premier League midfielder Andy Townsend echoed Keane’s sentiments, suggesting that United’s current squad requires an “elite manager” who can handle massive egos and immense pressure.

While Townsend praised Carrick for naming unchanged line-ups and trusting players like Kobbie Mainoo, he believes Simeone’s profile is better suited to closing the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City.

“I don’t think you want someone who’s talking about the ‘beautiful game’ right now,” Townsend told Boylesports. “You need someone prepared to put massive demands on the players… Only Simeone has those qualities.”

The Carrick Dilemma

The debate comes at a tricky time for the United board. Michael Carrick has stabilized the ship following Ruben Amorim’s departure, implementing a “back-to-basics” approach that has resonated with the fans. However, with elite names like Carlo Ancelotti and Luis Enrique also being discussed, the pressure to appoint a “big personality” remains high.

As Atletico Madrid face a turbulent season in La Liga, the possibility of Simeone finally seeking a new challenge in the Premier League has never felt more real. For United, the choice is clear: stick with the understated success of Carrick or embrace the “good havoc” of El Cholo.
