Pep Guardiola has added a layer of mystery to Manchester City’s tactical setup ahead of their massive trip to Anfield, refusing to confirm if Erling Haaland will lead the line against Liverpool.

Despite calling the Norwegian the “best striker in the world” during his pre-match press conference, Guardiola hinted that a final decision would only be made following Saturday’s training session. Haaland remains the Premier League’s top scorer with 27 goals this season, but the sensational form of his backup, Omar Marmoush, has given the City boss a “good headache.”

The Marmoush Factor

While Haaland is the established superstar, Marmoush was the hero in City’s recent 3-1 League Cup semi-final victory over Newcastle. The Egyptian’s brace secured City’s place in the Carabao Cup Final against Arsenal (scheduled for March 22nd).

“I’ve always said Haaland is the best striker in the world,” Guardiola told reporters. “But will he start? We’ll see tomorrow. We have options, and the team’s momentum is what matters most.”

Defensive Boost and Injury Doubts

City’s backline is set for a significant boost with Rúben Dias returning from a thigh injury. John Stones has also returned to “gradual training,” though Sunday might come too soon for a start. However, the midfield remains a concern as Bernardo Silva remains a major doubt following an injury picked up against Tottenham.

Predicted Man City XI (4-2-3-1):

  • GK: Donnarumma
  • Defenders: Matheus Nunes, Marc Guéhi, Rúben Dias (or Khusanov), Aït-Nouri
  • Midfield: Rodri, Reijnders
  • Attack: Semenyo, Cherki, Marmoush (or Foden)
  • Striker: Haaland (or Marmoush)

The Anfield Atmosphere

Liverpool, currently dealing with their own injury crisis including the absence of Jeremie Frimpong, will host the Cityzens this Sunday at 16:30 GMT. With the title race on a knife-edge, the tactical battle between Slot and Guardiola and the potential benching of Haaland will be the talking point of the season.
