Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly weighing up a move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, as the club prepares for a potential midfield vacancy this summer.

Despite arriving at the Etihad with high expectations, Phillips has struggled to find his footing under Pep Guardiola. After a series of underwhelming loan spells, including a recent stint at Ipswich Town, the 30-year-old remains on the fringes of the City squad. Now, with Wolves languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table, Gary O’Neil’s side is looking to Phillips as a “market opportunity” to add much-needed experience to their engine room.

The João Gomes Connection

The urgency behind Wolves’ interest is tied to the uncertain future of João Gomes. The Brazilian midfielder has emerged as a top target for several European powerhouses, and his potential departure would leave a massive void at Molineux.

According to the Daily Mail, Wolves’ recruitment team believes that a fully fit Kalvin Phillips could be the ideal candidate to step into that defensive midfield role. While Phillips has seen limited action this season featuring only once as a substitute in the League Cup—his proven Premier League pedigree with Leeds United remains a key factor in Wolves’ long-standing interest.

While no formal negotiations are currently underway, Manchester City are said to be “more than willing” to discuss a permanent transfer. For City, it’s a chance to trim their wage bill; for Phillips, it’s a lifeline to reignite a career that has stalled since his big-money move in 2022.

However, Wolves are still evaluating several options. Any move for Phillips would likely depend on the club’s financial flexibility and their ability to stay competitive in the top flight. With the midfield identified as the priority area for reinforcements, the coming weeks will be decisive for both the player and the club.
